Website Redesign Without Losing Rankings: A Migration Checklist
JUNE 10, 2026 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | WEB DESIGNRedesigns often change URLs, content and structure all at once, which is why some sites lose traffic after launch. Careful planning avoids most problems.
Before you start
- Crawl your current site and export every URL.
- Record your top pages by traffic, links and conversions in Search Console and analytics.
- Save benchmarks: rankings for key terms, speed scores and conversion rates.
- Decide what to keep: pages that perform well should keep their content, headings and URLs where possible.
During the build
- Build on a staging site that is blocked from search engines.
- Map every old URL to its new equivalent, and prepare 301 redirects for any that change.
- Preserve titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links and structured data on important pages.
- Keep or improve page speed and mobile usability.
- Test forms, tracking and accessibility.
Launch day
- Remove staging blocks such as noindex tags and robots.txt disallow rules.
- Test the redirects and fix errors immediately.
- Submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console.
- Check analytics tracking is firing correctly.
After launch
- Monitor crawl errors, indexing and rankings daily for the first weeks.
- Fix broken links and missing pages quickly.
- Update external profiles and links to point to new URLs where practical.
Some fluctuation is normal, but a well-planned migration usually recovers quickly. If you are planning a redesign, talk to us before you begin so SEO is part of the plan from the start.
