UX Writing: Small Words That Increase Conversions
JUNE 2, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | WEB DESIGNDesign is not only how a site looks. The small pieces of text inside it, called microcopy, guide visitors through every step. Clear words reduce hesitation and mistakes.
Make buttons specific
“Submit” tells people nothing. Use a label that says what happens next: “Get my free quote”, “Book a call” or “Download the guide”. Start with a verb and keep it short.
Explain forms briefly
Only ask for what you need. Add a short line under a field if you are asking for something sensitive, such as “We will only use your phone number to confirm your appointment.” This reduces drop-offs.
Write helpful error messages
Avoid blaming the user. Instead of “Invalid input”, say “Please enter a valid email address, for example name@company.com.” Show messages next to the field, not only at the top of the page.
Reduce anxiety near the action
- Mention reassurance close to buttons: free cancellation, no spam, secure payment.
- Show what happens after they click, such as “We reply within one business day.”
Keep a consistent voice
Use the same tone and terms everywhere. If it is a “basket” on one page, do not call it a “cart” on the next.
Test different wording with real visitors. Small text changes are among the cheapest improvements you can make.
