Site Architecture for SEO: Structure Pages Google Can Crawl

SEPTEMBER 4, 2025 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEO

Site architecture is how your pages are organised and connected. A clear structure helps people navigate and helps search engines discover, understand and prioritise your content.

Aim for a shallow hierarchy

Important pages should be reachable within about three clicks from the home page. Deeply buried pages receive less attention from visitors and crawlers.

Group content logically

Organise pages by topic. For example, a service company might have a Services section with separate pages for web design, development and SEO, each supported by related blog articles. This is often called a topic cluster or hub-and-spoke model.

Use clean, descriptive URLs

  • Keep them short and readable: /services/web-design.
  • Use lowercase letters and hyphens between words.
  • Avoid unnecessary parameters and session IDs.
  • Do not change URLs without adding permanent (301) redirects.

Support with navigation and links

Use a clear menu, breadcrumbs and contextual internal links. Every important page should be linked from at least one other page.

Provide an XML sitemap

A sitemap lists your canonical URLs and helps search engines discover them. Keep it updated and submit it in Search Console.

Manage duplicates

Use canonical tags for similar pages, and control filtered or sorted lists so they do not create endless near-duplicate URLs.

Plan your structure before you write content, and revisit it as your site grows.
