Search Intent: The Most Overlooked Ranking Factor
NOVEMBER 2, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEOTwo pages can target the same keyword and perform very differently because one matches what the searcher wants and the other does not. That desire is called search intent.
The four common types
- Informational: the person wants to learn, such as “what is a CMS”.
- Navigational: they are looking for a specific site or page, such as “SmartWebix contact”.
- Commercial investigation: they are comparing options, such as “best web design companies in Lahore”.
- Transactional: they are ready to act, such as “buy domain name” or “hire web developer”.
How to identify intent
Search for your target keyword and study the results. If the first page shows guides, write a guide. If it shows product pages, a blog post will struggle. Also note the format: lists, videos, comparison tables or local maps.
Match the page to the need
- Informational queries: clear explanations, examples and next steps.
- Commercial queries: comparisons, pros and cons, pricing guidance.
- Transactional queries: a clear offer, proof and an easy way to buy or enquire.
Watch for mixed intent
Some searches serve several needs. Cover the main one first, then briefly address secondary needs on the same page.
When you start from intent instead of keywords alone, your content becomes more useful, and rankings usually follow.
