Recovering From a Google Core Update: A Calm, Step-by-Step Plan

AUGUST 22, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEO

Google releases broad core updates several times a year, and each one can shift rankings. In August 2024, another core update rolled out. If your traffic dropped, resist the urge to change everything overnight.

Step 1: Wait and confirm

Core updates take a couple of weeks to roll out. Wait until Google says it has completed, then compare a few weeks of Search Console data to the period before it started.

Step 2: Find what actually dropped

Segment by page, query and device. A sitewide fall suggests a broad quality issue. A drop on a handful of pages is more likely a competitor improving or intent shifting.

Step 3: Review the affected pages honestly

  • Does the page fully answer the search better than those now ranking above it?
  • Is it outdated, thin or largely copied from other sources?
  • Does it show real experience and clear authorship?
  • Is it slow, cluttered with ads or hard to use on mobile?

Step 4: Improve, do not patch

Update, merge or remove weak pages. Add original insights, examples and clearer structure. Fixing symptoms with tiny tweaks rarely helps.

Step 5: Be patient

Google has said that improvements may take time to be recognised, sometimes until a later update. Keep publishing genuinely useful content and monitor the trend.

A core update is not a penalty. It is a re-evaluation of how well your pages serve searchers.
