Logo Redesign: When to Refresh Your Brand and When to Leave It
JANUARY 31, 2025 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | BRANDINGA logo is a shortcut to your reputation. Changing it can signal growth, but it can also erase recognition you spent years building. Consider the reasons carefully.
Good reasons to redesign
- The logo does not work at small sizes, such as favicons and social avatars.
- Your business has changed direction, and the old look no longer fits.
- It looks outdated compared with your competitors and your quality of work.
- It relies on complex details or many colours that are costly to print.
- You are merging with another company or entering a new market.
Weak reasons
Boredom, following a trend or a new manager’s taste is rarely reason enough. If customers recognise and trust your current logo, an evolution may be better than a revolution.
Refresh or full redesign?
A refresh keeps the core idea but modernises the details: cleaner shapes, updated colours or improved typography. A full redesign starts over. Refreshes carry less risk and are often enough.
How to roll it out
- Define what must be preserved and what should change.
- Test concepts with real customers or staff.
- Prepare all versions: horizontal, stacked, icon-only, one-colour and reversed.
- Update your website, social profiles, email signatures, documents and signage together.
- Announce the change and explain why.
Done thoughtfully, a refresh strengthens your brand instead of resetting it.
