Keyword Research Step by Step for Beginners
FEBRUARY 6, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEOKeyword research is the bridge between what you sell and the words people type into Google. Done well, it tells you which pages to create and how to describe them.
Step 1: List your topics
Write down the products, services and problems you deal with every day. Think like a customer: they rarely use your industry jargon.
Step 2: Expand with real suggestions
Type your topics into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions and the “People also ask” questions. Free tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Search Console add more ideas and rough volumes.
Step 3: Check the intent
Search for each keyword yourself. Do the results show guides, product pages or local businesses? Match your page type to what Google already rewards.
Step 4: Choose realistic targets
A new website will struggle to rank for very competitive phrases. Longer, more specific searches, such as “web design company in Lahore for restaurants”, have less competition and usually higher intent.
Step 5: Map keywords to pages
Give each page one main topic and a few related phrases. Avoid creating several pages that compete for the same search.
Finally, revisit your list every few months. Search Console will show you the queries you already appear for, which are often the easiest opportunities to improve.
