Internal Linking: The Simple Strategy That Boosts Rankings

AUGUST 4, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEO

Internal links connect one page of your site to another. They are one of the few SEO levers entirely under your control, yet many sites neglect them.

Why internal links matter

  • They help search engines discover and crawl your pages.
  • They show which pages are most important.
  • They pass relevance through descriptive anchor text.
  • They guide visitors to related content, keeping them on your site longer.

Practical rules

  • Use descriptive anchor text: “our web design services” is far better than “click here”.
  • Link from strong pages: pages that already receive traffic can point to pages you want to grow.
  • Keep important pages shallow: they should be reachable within a few clicks from the home page.
  • Link naturally: add links where they genuinely help the reader, not dozens in one paragraph.
  • Fix orphan pages: every page should have at least one link pointing to it.

Build topic clusters

Create a main guide on a broad subject and link it to detailed articles on subtopics, with each of those linking back. This shows depth and helps readers explore.

Audit regularly

Use a crawler or Search Console to find orphan pages, broken links and redirect chains. Update older posts with links to your newer ones so they benefit too.
