Google AI Overviews: How They Change Search and What to Do
MAY 15, 2024 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEOIn May 2024 Google began rolling out AI Overviews in the United States, adding an AI-generated summary with links above traditional search results for many queries. Other countries followed over time.
What changes for searchers
For some questions, people can now get a quick answer without scrolling. That may reduce clicks on simple informational queries, while complex or comparison-based searches still lead people to websites.
What it means for publishers
Google says links inside AI Overviews can attract clicks, but businesses should expect changes in how traffic arrives. Pages that only repeat basic facts are most exposed.
How to adapt
- Answer questions clearly: use direct headings and concise explanations near the top of a page.
- Add original value: data, examples, opinions and experience that a summary cannot replace.
- Show who you are: author names, credentials and real business details build trust.
- Keep the basics strong: fast pages, clean structure and helpful internal links still matter.
- Track more than clicks: watch impressions, brand searches and conversions in Search Console.
Do not chase every change
There is no special trick to “optimise” for AI Overviews. Google’s advice remains to create helpful, reliable content for people. Businesses that do that consistently are best placed whatever the results page looks like.
