Google AI Mode: What It Is and How Publishers Can Prepare
MAY 28, 2025 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEOGoogle introduced AI Mode as a new way to search: a conversational experience powered by its Gemini models where people can ask longer, more complex questions and follow up. It launched to users in the United States in May 2025 and has been expanding since.
How it differs from classic search
Instead of ten blue links, AI Mode writes an answer and includes links to sources. Google has described using a technique it calls “query fan-out”, breaking a question into related searches to gather information from many places.
What it means for websites
People will ask longer, more specific questions. Content that fully addresses a topic, and clearly covers related sub-questions, has a better chance of being used. Traffic patterns may change, and some simple queries may send fewer clicks.
How to prepare
- Cover topics in depth: answer the follow-up questions readers are likely to ask.
- Use clear structure: descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables help both people and machines.
- Add original value: data, first-hand experience and expert commentary.
- Keep technical basics sound: pages must be crawlable, indexable and fast.
- Maintain accurate business data: your Business Profile, product information and structured data.
Watch the data
Google has said that AI features are included in Search Console’s overall performance data, so track impressions, clicks and conversions and look at changes over time rather than reacting to single days.
