Content Refresh Strategy: Updating Old Posts for New Rankings

JUNE 24, 2025 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | SEO

Publishing new content is exciting, but your archive may hold your best opportunities. An article that already has links, history and some traffic can often be improved faster than a new one can rank.

Which posts to refresh

  • Pages with many impressions but a low click-through rate.
  • Pages ranking on positions 5 to 20 that could reach the top with improvement.
  • Posts whose traffic has declined over the last year.
  • Articles containing outdated facts, prices, screenshots or tools.

What to change

  1. Reconfirm the intent: search the target keyword again and check whether the results have changed.
  2. Update facts and examples: replace old statistics, remove dead links and add current sources.
  3. Fill gaps: add sections that answer questions competitors cover.
  4. Improve the title and description: make them clearer and more compelling.
  5. Refresh visuals: new images, charts and screenshots.
  6. Add internal links: point to newer relevant pages and link to the article from them.

Handle dates honestly

Show an “updated” date only when you have made meaningful changes. Do not change dates just to look fresh.

Track results

Record the date of each refresh, then compare clicks and rankings after four to eight weeks. Repeat the process every six to twelve months for your most important content.
