Choosing a Web Development Partner: Questions to Ask First

MAY 23, 2026 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | WEB DEVELOPMENT

Your website is a long-term business asset, so the partner you choose matters as much as the design itself. Beyond price, look for clarity, communication and a track record.

Ask about experience

  • Can you show similar projects and speak to past clients?
  • Who will actually work on my project, and what are their roles?
  • What technologies do you recommend, and why are they right for my goals?

Understand the process

  • How do you gather requirements and handle changes?
  • What is the timeline, and what are the milestones?
  • How will we communicate, and how often will I see progress?
  • How do you test on different devices and browsers?

Check quality and SEO

  • How do you handle page speed, accessibility and security?
  • Do you set up SEO basics, such as metadata, sitemaps and redirects?
  • What analytics and tracking will be included?

Clarify ownership and costs

  • Do I own the source code, design files, content and domain?
  • What is included in the quote, and what would cost extra?
  • What are the ongoing costs: hosting, licences and maintenance?

Plan for after launch

  • What support and warranty do you provide?
  • How are backups and updates handled?
  • Will you train my team to manage content?

Watch the red flags

Be careful with unrealistic promises of rankings, unusually low prices, reluctance to show past work or vague answers about ownership. A good partner explains things clearly and is honest about trade-offs.
