Brand Identity Basics: Logo, Colour, Typography and Voice

OCTOBER 19, 2025 | BY SMARTWEBIX TEAM | BRANDING

Brand identity is the visible and verbal expression of your business. When it is consistent, customers recognise you instantly and trust grows over time.

1. Purpose and positioning

Before any design, define who you serve, what problem you solve and what makes you different. Everything else expresses this foundation.

2. Logo

Your logo should be simple, distinctive and flexible. Prepare several versions: full, stacked, icon only, one-colour and reversed for dark backgrounds. Test it at very small sizes.

3. Colour palette

Choose a main colour, one or two supporting colours and neutrals. Colours carry emotion and meaning, so consider your audience and culture, and check text contrast for accessibility.

4. Typography

Select one or two typefaces: one for headings, one for body text. Prioritise legibility on screen and make sure the fonts are licensed and load quickly.

5. Imagery and graphics

Decide on a photography style, illustration approach and icon set. Real photos of your team and work usually beat generic stock images.

6. Voice

Define how you sound: friendly or formal, playful or precise, with example phrases.

Put it in a guide

A short brand guideline document with examples helps everyone, from designers to freelancers, apply the identity correctly. Review it once a year and update only when there is a good reason.

Consistency across your website, social media, documents and packaging turns a logo into a brand.
